no1: The Business Heart introduction.
What should good business have to do with a pulse and emotions?
Lets Ramble a bit about the Heart and why it should be the first starting point to any good long term sustainable business?
“The heart is the first organ to form during development of the body.” - Its a vital organ that forms and starts to beat to power up the formation of other vital organs.
The human body is phenomenal. It is complex, beautiful and sometimes it threatens you, surprises you or even inspires you – as funny as it may be – most of us didn’t get that manual to our bodies – we keep writing the body manual. Like that time you had your first teeth come out – everyone got so excited as they watched you chew for the first time – your parents didn’t freak out because that part of the human body manual exists. – you didn’t choose that moment, did you? Yet the human body in its complexity – has a brain which is within a body in order to perform its function and the way we think is in fact what makes us individuals. You are part of your human body even though you might not understand the functionality of the eye – you still can see. It was not a prerequisite to understand human anatomy in order to be alive. But it is crucial to learn how your body works to be useful, complete and alive!
So why all the rambling about body parts? Well – think about it- in a society where people are putting a lot of focus on fitness, identity and freedom- the society seems to understand the necessity of making good decisions about how to take care of your body and express yourself freely – the healthy body is a concept everyone understands .
If you have ever had a heart break or faced disappointment , then no one needs to tell you that it hurts. It lets you be human. No wonder , it goes without doubt that the heart is a critical organ. It is the centre organ of humans. The heart beat becomes that representation of what it means to be alive. What if we took this same analogy and started to rethink the how good business should be formed?
Whilst most business schools teach business models that are centered on frameworks to understand your future markets needs and channels to serve them - what if we challenged this business plan notion and started with shaping a business heart with strong pulse.
The question is can the anatomy of the heart teach us about how business should start and work? So how do we correlate this to business?
Having a heart means building up an intent and motivation that is beneficial to more than yourself. The moment a mission includes the people and communities in which it serves, this becomes the start of a good business. A good business has a heart with a steady pulse. What if business was more inspired and modeled by human anatomy? Would we begin to rethink the way we have been writing business models, or executing business decisions and go further to debug how we have shaped and branded business identities for centuries?
What if we started business by shaping the heart first? What would that mean ?
